About The People That Time Forgot by Edgar Rice Burroughs

The People That Time Forgot is a fantasy novel by American writer Edgar Rice Burroughs, the second of his Caspak trilogy. The sequence was first published in Blue Book Magazine as a three-part serial in the issues for September, October and November 1918, with The People That Time Forgot forming the second installment. The complete trilogy was later combined for publication in book form under the title of The Land That Time Forgot (properly speaking the title of the first part) by A. C. McClurg in June 1924. Beginning with the Ace Books editions of the 1960s, the three segments have usually been issued as separate short novels.

Anything Edgar Rice Burroughs writes is great. Period. That should be enough review but let me elaborate a bit more. As a kid I used to watch the Tarzan movies with Johnny Weismuller. I didn’t think reading a book by ERB would be better so for years ( and I mean like 45-50 years) I didn’t bother picking up a book by him. Then I watched a movie on tv , John Carter of Mars. I really liked it so I looked for what book/ author it was from. Yes, ERB. So, I got a few and read them. Unbelievably good. Better than the movie because the movie was a conglomeration of the books. So, I decided to try Tarzan . I was so impressed that this man could write so many good books. So far ahead of his time, he wrote of flying machines and weapons that did not exist. As with so many great science fiction writers his stories have the latitude of how far his imagination could reach. I don’t care really what covers the books come in or edition you pick up are ( as long as they are complete). Just pick it up and start reading.....you will soon by in a world of his making, enveloped by the energy, adventure, suspense and romance he weaves. Deeper and deeper you are enticed to imagine yourself embedded in the stories. Suddenly you realize, “ hey, this guy is REALLY good!”

The People That Time Forgot By Edgar Rice Burroughs Illustrated Edgar Rice Burroughs 9781541086135 Books Reviews

A great follow up for "The Land That Time Forgot". It answered some questions that arose from the first story but presented more baffling mysteries. Edgar's early works are just as enjoyable as the later ones. I have discovered a whole new world in reading, less complicated than today's authors.
One of Burroughs' 'Time Forgot' series. A bit corny as to the names and territories of the various inhabitants of this strange, lost world, but all in all, an inventive and creative story full of adventure.
Absolutely loved this! It's my first time reading this classic and I look forward to diving into the Tarzan series, too. This had so much great world building and imagery. I was captivated from beginning to end.
...Your country must indeed be a savage country, from which you are fortunate to have escaped to the peace and security of Caspak." Great adventure tale from a master story teller together with about a dozen black-and-white pictures of predators and weapons that added to the storyline. Fine edition that I do recommend!
Edgar Rice Burroughs' science fiction classic "The People that Time Forgot" gets the graphic novel treatment, courtesy of Campfire Classics, adapter Steven Philip Jones, and illustrator K.L. Jones. It is the sequel to "The Land that Time Forgot" and is perhaps best read in sequence.

As this story opens, the adventurous Tom Billings leads a rescue expedition to the remote island of Caprona, to find missing college classmate and close friend Bowen Tyler, the missing hero of the earlier book. Thanks to a manuscript in a bottle, Tom thinks he knows what to expect on this mysterious island of wild beasts and primitive men. Time will prove otherwise.

Tom's entrance onto the island by floatplane is a disaster, leaving him alone but well-armed in the island's interior. The rescue of a beautiful native girl named Ajor gives him a formidable traveling companion. Together, they will confront huge wild beasts and the fierce rivalries of primitive human bands. Their goal is a way home for each, a goal that will change with each new obstacle overcome.

This is an exciting adventure story populated with wild beasts, dinosaurs and acts of daring. The story line looks a little old-fashioned after nearly one hundred years, but there are some good old-fashioned values embedded in it. Highly recommended to the audience of young boys for whom it was written.
any true follower of mr erburroughs will appriciate this story series of which this continues of course the series could be view as a "talkie" version of 'obie' obien's masterpiece silent motion picture "the lost world (1925)" tis only the voyage to the destination altered the writings (full-length, short, prose, what-ever) seem to be able to place you quickly within the atmosphere, activities incusive of the adventure occuring at the moment of perusing the pages of burroughs tales although the tales of carson (venus), carter (mars), pellucidar, etc all seem to follow the same story-line(s) each brings an enjoyment with the twists, weaves, escapes and dangers of everyday activities in wonderous worlds
Tom Billings goes on a rescue mission to the prehistoric island of Caspak to rescue his friend, but when his airplane is downed by a pterodactyl, he must rely on the aid of a beautiful cavewoman to help him negotiate his way through the increasingly advanced human societies that inhabit the land.

I’ll always be biased in favor of this book. One of my first memories of being totally lost in a story was curling up with an omnibus edition of the Caspak trilogy from the Science Fiction Book Club when I was twelve or thirteen. Rereading it almost forty years later, I find that it holds up very well so long as you do not expect it to be more than what it is--a rousing pulp adventure with stalwart, capable heroes who are equal to any challenge. Some readers accuse Burroughs and other writers of the time of racism. Whatever their personal views might have been, their stories functioned as uncritical reflections of prevalent opinion of the time. I can understand how, for some, that might tarnish the innocent fun that others respond to in these tales. However, I wonder if Burroughs, in this case, might deserve a little more credit than some would give him. Billings spends most of the story resisting his feelings for Ajor because he feels that she is inferior, even referring to her as a “squaw” at one point in his first-person narration. However, by the end of the story he realizes how foolish he has been. The “races” of Caspak are mutually antagonistic and rigidly segregated, but this racial identity is a fluid thing, with most individuals progressing from one stage of evolution to another. The concept of race is really an illusion in Caspak.
