The third of the three Whitby books, featuring Benjamin and Jennet Laurenson and their eccentric auntie Alice Boston, brings this series to a conclusion worthy of Wagner's Ring Cycle: operatic, climactic, dramatic, and with a sense of the inevitable and inexorable even in the most unforeseen narrative twists. This means that some characters go to their doom, never to return; and others remain to carry on. All three books are highly emotional about relationships, beginning with the Laurenson siblings and their hopeless mourning for their lost parents.
What brings to mind George MacDonald, who, a century earlier, wrote everything from The Princess and the Goblins to Sir Gibbie and who was an outspoken critic of sectarian, denominational religion, is the character of Nelda Shrimp, one of the fictional Aufwaders. Newly widowed, she finds herself with child by her departed husband, and her pregnancy promises to be an ordeal that neither mother nor infant are expected to survive. Against all odds, especially the societal pressure applied by the others of her kind, she refuses to terminate the pregnancy, daring all for the chance of bringing life into the world. For this alone, were he alive and present, George MacDonald would seek out author Robin Jarvis and insist on shaking his hand.

I enjoyed the three books in this series. They're for young people but that doesn't limit them to that group. Very different and fun. With some drama as well. If you like fantasy, mystery , I'm sure you'll like them.
