Really enjoyed the book! It has lots of great advice and information for everyone. I am a married mom with single friends and purchased the book to be able to help understand the situation and perspective my friends deal with. I learned ways to better support them, listen more effectively, and better respond when they need my help. I have a friend who just divorced, and am going to give it to her as a gift. I know it will be wonderful for her to read at this difficult time.Thank you for taking the time and effort to write this book Valerie!

Making lemonade from the lemon of losing her husband suddenly, Valerie J. Steimle saw the problems of an LDS single first-hand. Her decision to write a book focusing on how to solve those problems, with insights that assist not only the singles themselves, but LDS leaders and friends of singles, is definitely a sweet treat for all.
We have adopted a family in our area that has lost their husband/father, leaving 3 children under three and his wife. Exactly what to do to help, was not easily understood, so we did anything we could. After reading the book, we were given many different ways to serve this family, along w/any other single(s) we have come in contact with. It is quite clear to all those around us, that we have received all the blessings through our service. Any time the three girls see us, they come running to give us a hug...and search our pockets for candy. Acts of Service sounds so cold, and heartless; so we will call it Acts of Love. The book tells us to love all we can, and we must not forget the needs of our singles. I recommend this book to those who wish to Love our singles.
While promoting "Awakening Avery," my LDS women's novel about a recently-widowed, middle-aged woman's struggle to redefine her self and her family after the passing of her husband, I met just such a woman. Her name is Valerie J. Steimle, a member of a women's writing group I belong to.
As soon as she heard the premise of my book, she said it sounded very much like her own life, which as it turns out, has become the topic of her own writing career, addressing the particular needs LDS over-30 singles confront in a very family-driven church.
Valerie Steimle's current release on the topic is "Of One Heart, Being Single In The LDS World." It is not a dry, professional discourse. Instead, it's a non-fiction collection of personal essays with a journal-like feel, as if Valerie Steimle were inviting you over to her house to offer you the benefit of her personal observations and experience.
And her experience is vast and unique. Her personal story is so compelling that a fictional account would be criticized for being over-the-top. On December 31st, 2005 she awoke, a married mother of nine children, ages six to twenty-four. One was on a foreign mission, one was married, two were of college and post-college-age, and five were still at home. Minutes after midnight, her fifty-year-old husband of twenty-five years passed silently away of a massive coronary, leaving her to start the New Year alone. In the next year she would become a widow, a single parent, a grandmother, and a success story about not just surviving, but thriving in the face of adversity.
Steimle recognizes the unique needs of singles, but she also points out the need for singles to step up and claim their place in their wards and families. To these ends, she wrote "Of One Heart" to
a) inspire singles to excel despite being single in a two-by-two world,
2) to help loved ones better support singles, and
3) to help leaders better minister to singles
In addition to Steimle's personal observations, "Of One Heart" also represents the insight she's gleaned from talking to singles in all situations, and from surveys she's conducted amongst her peers. Beautiful, insightful quotes and scriptures that kept her going are sprinkled throughout.
"Of One Heart" is almost a hands-on manual for LDS over-30 singles, including advice on organizing successful conferences and activities to involve members of this frequently lonely sphere. It would make an excellent resource to share with singles, as well as those who love and lead them.
Valerie J. Steimle answered a few questions about her experiences as an LDS single.
1. What was the hardest part of being an LDS single-parent?
The hardest part of being an LDS single-parent is bearing total responsibility for my children. I can have home teachers and visiting teachers helping me, but the ultimate responsibility was mine and that was overwhelming at times.
2. What is the single best piece of advice for over-30 singles?
Stay active at church. Go to the temple for peace, and keep yourself worthy always. Whether you realize it or not the Lord is watching over you always.
3. What is the best piece of advice you can give to RS and Priesthood leaders trying to minister to over-30 singles?
The best advice is to not judge too harshly. I have seen this occur unnecessarily when there was no fault on the part of the single member. The Lord knows our hearts and why we are in the situation we have found ourselves. Just love those singles in your area. Love them back to the Gospel.

From the beginning of this book I felt like...Valerie "gets it". Another thing I want to say, is that this book was not published by the big companies that normally publish LDS books. This is a good thing, because I feel that Valerie was able to be more open and honest than if this book had been published by one of them. For example, she writes one whole chapter on "A Note to the Priesthood". Basically, she outlines for Priesthood leaders things they should know and how they should learn to understand their role in helping the singles in their ward. This is done respectively, but bluntly. The number one things that most people don't understand is this point she brings out, "Understand that many worthy single adults feel uncomfortable at Sunday meetings because of their situation." I still feel this way at times. I was once a part of a couple and now I am alone sitting there with my children. The weekends they are with their Dad, I feel even more uncomfortable sitting there. I have appreciated those who have put forth the effort to make me feel wanted and sat by me or asked me to come sit with them and their family.
Another aspect that I needed to read and sink into my heart was this advice. It is about how to cope with being single.
-Make sure to pray and have scripture /reading study. We must keep the spirit with us always regardless of our circumstances.
-Attend your church meetings every Sunday. Valerie says,"Even if you just sit and feel the Spirit, that time helps you for the rest of the week and it will refill your emotional cup."
-Church Service Ask your priesthood leader if you want a calling and do not have one yet. It does feel good to serve others and this takes your mind off or your own problems.
-Support the singles program this is something that I should do more of. Truthfuly, I just haven't had much time to do many things besides parenting, teaching full-time and reading. ;)
-Keep a Song in Your Heart. I just love what Valerie said here,"When experiencing great tribulations and having to take one day at a time, it is so very difficult to have joy; in fact many times it is painful. Whenever you can remember that Heavenly Father loves you. There are many looking down on you that love you and want you to keep a song in your heart."
I feel that every member of the church, male and female should read this book. This book was written for those church members, who are single and over thirty years old. It was also written for those wanting to know how to help their friends and family members who are single. She has included as much information as possible, to help others understand, life from the single perspective. I also liked how Valerie pointed out one more reason all members should read this book.
"As my stake president so wisely counseled 'Everyone will eventually be single sometime in their life.' Whether you are taken and leave a spouse behind or your spouse is taken and you are left behind; whether you have never had the chance to marry, or find yourself divorced Everyone will be single."
I wish that I could share more from this book because it has given me such strength to carry on in my single life. Valerie list many resources, helpful websites, articles and books about coping with single life and single parenting. This book was needed in my life. It speaks to the world in ways, we singles would like to but sometimes can't express, but gives us a voice to share our lives and struggles with others.
I highly recommend this book, it will be worth your money and your time 100%!
Easy to read with great references. Completed this book without putting down on cross country flight. I will read more of her books.
Great book, highly recommend!
